As we journey through this blog together, we come to understand teaching and what it means to be an effective leader step by step. Our society demands specific skills for students to not only navigate within our current tech heavy world but to thrive in. I connected with my first ever mentor at a high school I taught at for two years. He shared with me an example of how students can make a difference not just when they depart from their schooling but also how they can put their current knowledge towards change.

As noted last week, we have endless information online which can be greatly beneficial when needing to access current events. However, it’s easy for students to fall prey to misinformation when navigating through articles of unreliable sources. As teachers, we must guide students towards knowledge that will actually benefit them. My mentor designed an online document shared district-wide when the Israeli and Palestinian conflict escalated back in 2023. This document was made to help answer any questions students might have and provide resources that support students’ curiosity…

This document represents how educators should address current events by not only reminding students they have resources to access but providing resources that are peer-reviewed and pass the filter of reliability. As teachers, we must not only guide our students but teach them to become leaders themselves. My mentor designed this document to educate students on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but also to provide examples that teach students how to evaluate websites for themselves.
